The Environmental Collection at Selby Public Library, provides access to information concerning all aspects of our environment.
Civic Leader Ann Marbut is credited with starting the collection over 25 years ago. In 1998, the Gulf Gate Library collection was moved to the new modern Selby Public Library.
Presently, the collection has grown to 140 current journal titles, more than 1,500 videos and DVD’s and over 11,000 books on topics such as ecology, green buildings, endangered species, sustainability, solar energy, recycling, natural history, water use, waste management, gardening, bird watching, xeriscaping and ecosystem restoration. This is one of the largest environmental collections located in a public library in the U.S.A.
Almost everything in the collection can be requested and borrowed by patrons at other Sarasota and neighboring county libraries via Interlibrary Loan. Materials range from scholarly books and journals for researchers to basic information and videos for students and other patrons.
The collection is located on the second floor of the Selby Public Library and is open to the public during library hours. Senior Special Collections Librarian Vera Neumann-Wood is available for assistance and to discuss donations and new partnerships. Call (941) 861-1175 for more information or e-mail Vneumann@scgov.net
