"Open Book Gateway” is a gateway-type structure formed by three open books with pages featuring six, profile-cut quotations in English, as well as the Arabic and Chinese translations. The artwork is approximately 18 feet tall. The quotations were recommended by a committee composed of county staff and community representatives. They were among 86 suggestions submitted by Sarasota County residents and Fruitville Library patrons. Bilingual Sarasota County employees provided the Arabic and Chinese translations.

The Board of County Commissioners awarded the $53,250 commission to Robertson in April. The former full-time artist for the Town of Glenrothes, Scotland, Robertson has created many large-scale public artworks throughout the United Kingdom. This will be his first major commission in the United States.
Robertson has been living for the past three months in The Hermitage, an artists’ retreat in Englewood, while creating the sculpture at Kinney-Johnson Fabricators Inc., a Sarasota metal fabrication shop.
