Policies
1. The Sarasota County Library System accepts gifts of money, books, DVDs, CDs and the like with the understanding that the library staff may do with them as they see fit.
-
Library staff cannot give appraisals of items donated.
-
Gifts of materials may be added to the library collection subject to the same principles and standards of selection as are applied to all materials added to the library collection.
2. All materials in the library collection will be displayed, circulated, or made available for use in a manner consistent with its facilities, good library practice and the needs of the public.
3. It is understood that the Sarasota County Library System is to have full authority as to when, where, and how any are displayed or used.
4. The Library System will try to comply with the wishes of the donor of a gift, but reserves the right, as conditions change, to assign any of its materials wherever the need is greatest.
5. A library that is used extensively by its public sustains losses through mutilation, theft and ordinary wear. The library cannot guarantee that any gift will be a part of the collection permanently.
6. All gifts of materials must be in usable physical condition. The library will not accept materials which are not outright gifts.
7. The library reserves the right to accept or discard, at its discretion, any unsolicited material sent to the library or its branches. In addition, the library reserves the right to distribute any gifts to the appropriate Friends group for resale by that group without prior notification to the donor.
8. The library encourages and welcomes cash gifts, endowment funds and other bequests (in general or specified areas) and other library materials and equipment, for improving library facilities. This money may be designated as memorials or honoraria by the donor.
