Services The Selby and Venice libraries offer extensive genealogy collections for personal genealogy research. At the Selby Library, volunteer members of the Genealogical Society of Sarasota staff the special collections desk, (normally from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily), including weekends. If not, the special collections staff is available to help patrons with requests. Volunteer specialists are available. Appointments with specific volunteers can be made via 941-861-1121. The genealogy computer at the Selby Library is used exclusively for genealogy research, with access to online databases and also the collection of almost 200 CD-ROMS. At the Venice Library, trained volunteers are available for research assistance during the week and on weekends.The genealogy computer at the Venice Library gives users access to a collection of CD-ROMs. The public access Internet computers may be used for online research as well.  Policies With the exception of materials labeled CIRCULATING, materials at both the Selby and the Venice Libraries are for research only and cannot be checked out. Materials in both the Selby and Venice Libraries genealogy collections may be requested by other Sarasota County libraries for in-house use only.  Self-service photocopiers are available for public use. The volunteers are available to assist patrons with research questions but cannot make photocopies for patrons or work on an individual patron’s genealogy. Volunteers cannot accept a payment of any kind. Genealogy materials in the Sarasota County Library System are not loaned out through interlibrary loan, but photocopies may be requested by other libraries. Sarasota County Library System patrons may request genealogy materials not available in the county through Interlibrary loan but no guarantees can be made on receiving the materials requested. Libraries adhere to their individual interlibrary loan policies. Certain fragile books have been identified and require extra care to handle.
