Internet Policies and Rules for Use

Services

The Sarasota County Library System provides Internet access in accordance with the Libraries' Mission Statement and the Library Bill of Rights adopted by the American Library Association’s Freedom to Read. The Library System is committed to make Internet access available for educational and informational purposes.

While the Internet contains a wealth of materials, you should be aware that some of this might be considered offensive, controversial or inappropriate for children.

The Sarasota County Library System has prepared a World Wide Web home page to assist users in their Internet searches and staff have identified and recommended specific starting points on the library’s home page.

All Sarasota County Library locations offer wireless Internet access (or wi-fi) to patrons using their own appropriately equipped wireless devices. For more information, please refer to the Libraries Unplugged flyer (PDF).

Use of library computers implies acceptance of the following policies and rules.

The library reserves the right to terminate computer privileges of anyone abusing these policies and rules.

Policies
  • As with all library materials, monitoring a child’s access to the Internet is the sole responsibility of the parent or legal guardian.
  • Users are expected to comply with all applicable laws and regulations regarding the use, transmission and dissemination of computer generated information.
  • In accordance with Florida Statutes, Chapters 847.011(1)a and 847.0133(1), displaying obscene materials to minors or printing such materials may be a violation of the law and could result in penalties, including loss of computer privileges, potential loss of library privileges and possible prosecution.
  • Because of limited electronic resources not all areas of the Internet may be available to library patrons.
  • Software is used to block access to pornographic Web sites. However, this software may not block all Web sites users might find offensive.
  • To ensure that Internet sites are not blocked unnecessarily, a "Web Site Consideration Request" form is available at the Reference Desk.
  • The Library cannot guarantee the accuracy, authority, timeliness or usefulness of information obtained on the Internet and cannot be held responsible for any damages related to use of such information.
  • The Library is not responsible for damages to a patron’s computer, disks or files resulting from any direct or indirect use of library computers.
  • Libraries may reserve public computers for special programs or tutoring sessions.
  • Sarasota County Libraries reserve the right to revise the "Internet Policy" or "Rules for Use" at any time.
  • Individual libraries have the authority to limit the time a user remains on a computer.

Rules for Use
  • Users must comply with the Library’s posted "Code of Conduct."
  • Computers must be used as provided.
  • Users are not permitted to add, delete or modify the hardware or software.
  • Users may not use CD-ROMs, except as provided by the Library.
  • At the end of the session, users will return the screen to the Main Menu.
  • The number of users at any computer is limited to two persons.
  • No food or drink is permitted on or near the computers (see Code of Conduct).
  • Computer users are expected to provide their own clean diskettes if they wish to save files.
  • Users must use their own library card or guest pass when signing on to use a computer. Use of multiple cards or guest passes is not permitted.
  • The library reserves the right to terminate computer privileges of anyone abusing the above mentioned policies, rules and guidelines.
  • Disruptive or inappropriate behavior can also result in the loss of computer privileges.
